Die MTV VMA 2021 Nominierungen sind da! Ganz vorne mit dabei: Justin Bieber, der mit sieben Nominierungen die diesjährige Liste anführt, dicht gefolgt von Megan Thee Stallion mit sechs. Billie Eilish, BTS, Doja Cat, Drake, Giveon und Lil Nas X sind jeweils fünf mal nominiert, genau wie Olivia Rodrigo, die dieses Jahr erstmalig nominiert ist.
Die große Preisverleihung findet am 12. September im Barclays Center in New York City statt. In Deutschland überträgt MTV die MTV VMA 2021 ab 2:00 Uhr in der Nacht zum 13. September live. Die Wiederholung erfolgt am 13. September um 21:00 Uhr.
Wie immer liegt es einzig allein in den Händen der Fans, wer die begehrten Moonpersonen am Ende mit nach Hause nehmen darf. Seit heute kann auf vma.mtv.com in 14 geschlechtsneutralen Kategorien abgestimmt werden. Unter anderem haben die Nominierten die Möglichkeit, in den Kategorien “Video of the Year”, “Artist of the Year” und “Best Collaboration” zu gewinnen. Das Voting endet am 3. September.
Die Abstimmung für “Best New Artist” läuft noch bis zur Show am Sonntag, den 12. September 2021. Nominierungen für die Social-Media-Kategorien, wie “Best Group” und “Song of Summer”, werden zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt bekannt gegeben.
MTV setzt in diesem Jahr vor allem auf eine Zusammenarbeit mit aufstrebenden BIPoC-Künstlerinnen und -Künstlern: Gemeinsam mit Marlene Marmolejos (@motionmami), Aja Walton (@ajackdannie) und Fred Sands IV (@IVormerlyknownas) wurden die wichtigsten Kategorien der Show angekündigt, darunter “Video of the Year”, “Song of the Year” und “Artist of the Year”. Alle Kategorien wurden im Stile der jeweiligen Influencer*innen bekannt gegeben.
Außerdem dürfen sich Fans dieses Jahr wieder auf ein Live-Publikum vor Ort freuen, denn die MTV VMA werden eine der ersten Preisverleihungen in New York City sein, seit die Stadt wiedereröffnet wurde. Die Gesundheit und Sicherheit von Künstler*innen, Fans, Mitarbeitenden und Partner*innen hat oberste Priorität. MTV und das Barclays Center arbeiten eng mit staatlichen und lokalen Behörden zusammen, damit Musikfans aus aller Welt sicher zusammenkommen können. Die aktuellen Gesundheits- und Sicherheitsprotokolle des Barclays Centers können hier eingesehen werden. Weitere Protokolle werden kurz vor der Veranstaltung bekannt gegeben.
